Freelance Travel Writing Linking the inner city suburbs of Fortitude Valley and Kangaroo Point is Brisbane's' Story Bridge. Story Bridge was names after John Douglas Story, a prominent public servant under the secretary for education between 1906 and 1920. The Story Bridge was built to divert traffic away from the central business district.

The design of the bridge, which opened in July 1940, was based on the Jacque Cartier Bridge in Montreal. It is a prominent feature in the annual River Fire display and is illuminated each night. Story Bridge is also a tourist and recreational location, as it is possible to go on guided walks up to the bridge top.

The 80 metre high climb above the Brisbane River takes about two and a half hours and included commentary from the climb leader on the history of the bridge, Brisbane and local landmarks. The views stretch from the Glass House Mountains in the north to Brisbane's Moreton Bay and Islands down to the Gold Coast region. The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is open all week and has climbs available throughout the day, twilight and night to all people over 10 years old and over 130 cm high.

The top of Story Bridge has also become a place for romance. Since the guided walks opened in October of 2005 their have been 120 romantics each Valentines Day, over 500 proposals and 2 wedding ceremonies.

After climbing up the Story Bridge, a good place to relax and eat afterwards is the Story Bridge Hotel. This Hotel opened in the late 1800s and is a city favourite. It launched the National Festival of Beers and the internationally famous Australian Cockroach Races. You can choose for a variety of eating options and a bar is built in what was the World War Two bomb shelter. An upper level, velvet-walled Martini Bar has verandah views of the Central Business District, two meeting rooms and stunning city views just four minutes from the city centre. Under the Bridge is Captain Burke Park which is a great place for a picnic or a barbecue. The area has a children's playground, taps, BBQs power and car parking with toilets nearby.
